About: Palms Australia has been sending volunteers to developing countries for 50+years. Palms global volunteers are vehicles for development and social change through mentoring and exchange of skills.
Countless studies and our own experience over 50 years confirm, that when communities are supported and empowered through building capacity and skills, the whole society benefits. Families are healthier, more children go to school, agricultural productivity improves and earnings increase. In essence, communities become more resilient.
The requests we receive from overseas communities are far greater than what we can currently fill. Palms Australia is seeking volunteers willing to participate in an authentic cross-cultural mission in countries across Asia, Africa or the Pacific. Positions exist in education, health, administration, agriculture/farming, trades and other skilled areas.

Whilst not entirely unexpected, we are nevertheless disappointed with the response to our petition calling for a ban on the importation of primates which has this week been tabled in Parliament. Click here to see a copy of the Hansard. The response is more or less the usual standard response to all enquiries concerning animal research – that it is governed by the code of practice and approved by an animal ethics committee. We therefore need to increase the pressure to ensure the government listens to our concerns and takes action on this important issue.
Please take a moment to phone and/or email Tony Burke’s Parliamentary Office and let him know you are disappointed that:
- He has failed to implement a ban on the importation of primates for research
- He has dismissed the concerns of over 10,000 petitioners
- He has failed to acknowledge the evidence in the report and footage from the British Union Against Vivisection which clearly shows that macaques ARE being captured from the wild.
His contact details are: Phone (02) 6277 7640, Email tony.burke.mp@environment.gov.au.
If you haven’t already, please download our petition and contact HRA to obtain postcards for all your friends and colleagues to sign.
