HAT: World Walks for Water and Sanitation

January 31, 2014  |  Event  |  Comments Off  |  Share
HAT-blog Event: World Walks for Water and Sanitation
Date: Sunday 23 March 2014
Time: 10:00am
Location: Alexandra Gardens Melbourne CBD – Kooyong Station (Approx 7km, or 1.5 hours).
Cost: $10 registration donation, or $30 registration donation and T-shirt. All money raised will go to the Mampando Village Hygiene and Sanitation project.

Every year since 2011, thousands of people from across the world have come together to appeal for universal access to water and sanitation, a basic human right that is essential to life and livelihoods. Currently 40% of the world cannot access a toilet, and almost 800 million people do not have access to safe water. In Tanzania, 5.5 million people are without access to a safe sanitation facility. This is particularly troublesome for women and children who are vulnerable to violence and sexual abuse. Water-related diseases, like cholera and diarrhoea, are still a leading cause of illness and death, and women and children can spend up to 7 hours a day collecting clean water when they could be working or at school.

In March, the world will walk for the right to clean Water and Sanitation.

Join the HAT team as they walk in solidarity with their friends in Tanzania and raise money to improve the quality of life for those living in the village of Mampando. The Mampando Village Hygiene and Sanitation project will provide the community with a health and sanitation centre and education around the importance of sanitation in the reduction of disease.

Last year, 480,000 people across the world walked for water and sanitation.

Sustainable Living Festival 2014

1:30PM, 15th February

If continuous growth is unsustainable, but ‘de-growth’ is unstable, what to do? An interactive forum on the ‘new economy’ with expert panel featuring Dr Richard Denniss (Executive Director, The Australia Institute), Dr Jagjit Plahe (Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy, Monash University), and Keith Badger (Chair of OASES Graduate School), facilitated by Anthony James (Head of OASES Graduate School & postgraduate course convenor at Swinburne University’s National Centre for Sustainability). Re-examining our economic system is crucial to sustainability, yet while this is becoming widely recognised, we seem no closer to navigating our way to a more sustainable system. We ask these leading thinkers for their propositions.

AID/WATCH: Aid Talks #7 – Where Is Your Aid Money Going?

November 27, 2013  |  Event  |  Comments Off  |  Share
Aid-watch-blog
When: 9 Dec 2013 – 6:30pm – 8:00pm

Where: Surry Hills Community Centre – 405 Crown St Surry Hills, NSW

Join AID/WATCH for the seventh and final Aid Talks session this year to discuss where Australian aid money goes, and for the launch of the updated Where Is Your Aid Money Going? guide.

A few years ago AID/WATCH launched its guide on aid, asking the simple, but crucially important question – where is your aid money going? This question is central to the work AID/WATCH does in critically examining how Australian aid money is spent and who it ultimately benefits. Multilateral organisations, NGOs and corporations are all beneficiaries of aid programs and policies, often at the expense of the communities the aid targets.

Since the launch of the guide, the significance of this question has not diminished, in fact it has become more and more important. AID/WATCH has updated the Where Is Your Aid Money Going? guide, and invite you to the launch.
